SMS/Text Messaging Privacy Policy

Brandon Public Library is committed to protecting patron privacy and the confidentiality of personal information. This policy outlines how we collect, use, and manage information related to SMS/text messaging services.

Information Collected

When patrons choose to communicate with the library via SMS/text message, we may collect and store:

  • Mobile phone numbers provided by the patron
  • Message content exchanged between the patron and library staff
  • Limited interaction metadata necessary to provide service (such as timestamps or delivery status)

How We Use SMS Messaging

SMS/text messaging is used solely to support library services and patron assistance. This may include:

  • Responding to reference or general information questions
  • Account assistance, such as renewals or circulation inquiries
  • Program and event registration or related updates
  • Appointment or service-related communication initiated by the patron

SMS messaging is not used for unsolicited marketing or mass promotional advertising.

Consent and Opt-In

Patrons must provide consent before receiving SMS messages from the library. Consent may be given verbally, in person, or through program registration or service interactions where a mobile number is provided and texting is requested as a communication method.

Opt-Out

Patrons may opt out of SMS messaging at any time by replying with keywords such as STOP, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, or similar requests. Once opted out, patrons will receive no further messages unless they re-enroll in the service.

Data Retention and Security

SMS communications are retained only as long as necessary to provide library services and maintain service records. The library takes reasonable measures to protect SMS data through its communication provider (Dialpad) and internal handling procedures.

Third-Party Provider

SMS services are facilitated through a third-party communications provider (Dialpad). While the library uses this platform to send and receive messages, it remains responsible for ensuring appropriate use and protection of patron data.

Limitations

SMS messaging is not intended for sensitive personal data, confidential transactions, or emergency communication. Patrons are encouraged to use in-person, phone, or email communication for complex or sensitive matters.
